A deliberately lit fire ripped through the
administration area of Churchlands Senior High
School last Thursday night, causing damage
estimated at $400,000.
Officers from the arson squad said the fire had
been lit after the arsonist broke in at around
9.30pm.
It started in the administration area,
destroying computers, phone lines and phones.
It was quickly controlled and damage contained
to the administration area.
Investigators said they had gathered forensic
evidence but had no firm leads.
They said they were following some lines of
enquiry that included ex-students and students
under suspension. They called on any witnesses to
contact them.
In 1997 the school was nearly destroyed by a
deliberately lit fire, which caused damage
estimated at $9-$12 million. It had to be
rebuilt.
Principal Neil Hunt said the eight-year old
administration building would be out of action for
more than a year. A demountable would be brought in
to be used as an office.
"Seven workstations were destroyed and there was
a lot of water damage," he said.
Memorabilia, such as honour boards and
photographs of former Beazley Medal winners, were
destroyed.
Mr Hunt expected the ceiling would have to be
ripped out.
"All the student files are safe," he said. "They
were locked away. It was a worry because this is a
busy time of year when students are selecting
subjects for study and enrolments are taking
place."
On Friday, normal classes were conducted for the
1800 students, despite computers, the internet and
telephone systems being out of action.
Administrative staff moved into the library.
