At 6.45pm last Friday, my friend and I were
walking down St Leonard's Street, Mosman Park, with
my two small dogs on their leashes when a vicious
dog that looked part-pit bull/staffy came flying
out of Centennial Park (we were 50m away on the
other side of the road).
He first went for my little shih tzu (clearly
the smaller and easier target) and grabbed at her
coat.
I yanked her up high on her lead, literally
hanging her as he snapped at her coat. I have never
heard a dog scream before – it was chilling.
Unperturbed, the attacker went for my other dog,
a lhasa apso, and by this time my friend, who was
unused to dogs, was screaming loudly.
We were all tangled up in leads and I couldn't
get to the lhasa and hold the shih tzu at the same
time.
The attacker's owner was calling it "Satan" and
we couldn't retrieve the lhasa from it.
A man pulled up in his car and asked, "Are you
okay?". I yelled, "No we're not", whereupon he
dived out of his vehicle, leaving the door open,
and somehow managed to hold down the attacker so I
could retrieve my dog who by this time was bleeding
and injured.
"Just take your dogs and get out of here," the
man said, "we will never calm this one down with
them around."
I ran up St Leonard's Street, with both dogs in
my arms, and went straight to the vet's.
The lhasa had bites on his leg, a torn ear and
deep punctures and nasty grazing on his neck. His
collar, which had diamantes, was severely damaged
and it was probably this that saved his life.
It seemed the attacker had had several attempts
at biting his neck and many of the diamantes were
missing, meaning his teeth went there instead of
into my dog's neck.
The Good Samaritan who came to our rescue was
amazing. If he hadn't intervened, I am convinced my
dog would have been killed.
He also managed to talk the pit bull's owner
into cooperating and giving him her phone number,
which he then passed to my friend who had stayed
there with him.
My friend said the owner made a remark about
people and small dogs.
We passed the number on to the Mosman Park
ranger who is now dealing with the matter.
If our rescuer happens to read this letter, or
if there is anyone who saw the incident or knows
who he is, could they please ring me on 0416 192
119 because I would like to reward him.
