Few adults can boast they've hit a hole-in-one on a
golf course, but even fewer seven-year-olds can
make the same claim.
Swanbourne youngster Tom Anderson managed this
amazing feat on the Lake Claremont public golf
course last week, watched by his brother Hamish (9)
and his caddy/mother Lucinda.
She and Tom were both a bit disbelieving of what
he'd done, but Hamish spotted it immediately, and
jumped in the air to celebrate his brother's
golfing prowess.
"Mum and I didn't believe it until we walked
over and saw the ball in the hole," Tom said.
The Andersons were playing on the par-three
short course, which Lucinda said was great for
kids.
"We come here every holiday and play together,"
she said.
"It's ideal for kids because it's not too long
and not too hard."
But that's not to say that sinking a hole-in-one
on the short course is easy.
Staff at the club said that in the past two
years only one other golfer had managed to do what
Tom did.
She was a woman over 80 who was so thrilled by
her achievement, she went back to the clubhouse and
shouted everyone a Cornetto ice-cream. When Tom was
informed that it was now tradition for a
hole-in-oner to shout whoever is in the clubhouse
an ice-cream, he looked a bit confused and said he
didn't have enough pocket money.
Lucinda said Tom's surprise achievement had
spurred him on to have two lessons with golfing pro
Andy Gott in the past week – and Tom said he
was now eyeing Tiger Woods' top spot, albeit some
years down the track.
"Tom's got a great drive," Lucinda said.
He has been playing at Claremont since he was
five.
