Picnics, 'pies and a naked diner!

Valerie Anderson found inspiration in picnics and magpies for her prize-winning painting entitled Shoo!

Boatsheds, jetties, the river, a picnic that includes a naked woman, and HMAS Sydney all figure as subjects in this year's Mosman Park Art Awards.

The winner, Valerie Anderson said, she worked on the idea that Mosman Park was so relaxed and lovely that many people enjoyed picnics - and so do magpies and she likes both.

Her work Shoo! is a collagraph print (one of 20) priced at $1100.

Her prize, as open winner, is $4000 and her print will be bought and displayed by the town.

Second prize ($2000) went to Barbara Butler for her pen and ink Sketch of Mosman Bay from the heights of Bay View Terrace.

Other prizes and commendations went to Anthony Stanbridge and Jude Willis.

Anthony's work was a poignant image, Last Days of Duty HMAS Sydney II, as the warship steamed past Mosman Park, with a steam train and the Dingo flour mill as receding memories, heading towards her fatal showdown with the Kormoran in 1941.

Jude took a witty view of local life with Le Dejeuner Sur L'herbe - Camelot Style, showing a group on a picnic rug - just the way many people do dine alfresco on Mann Oval before they go to the summer outdoor movies - except that one of these picnickers is a naked woman.

Artists of all ages were given the challenge of capturing life's cameo moments in the Mosman Park region

A few strayed over the border to touch on the massive Moreton Bay fig roots in Freshwater Bay and the pylon at Cottesloe.

The competition has been running since 1985. This year the sections were Open Art, Open Photographic, Youth Encouragement Art and Youth Encouragement Photographic.

They attracted 615 entries.
