Claremont joins the anti-Stephenson club

Claremont has thrown its support behind Cambridge in opposition to the extension of the Stephenson Highway.

On Tuesday, councillors voted to voice objection and support re-establishing a coalition of western suburbs councils against the extension.

The council will also contribute $15,000 towards developing an action plan.

About 50 years ago, the Stephenson-Hepburn Plan was completed as the first regional plan for the Perth metropolitan area.

The long-term plan for the Stephenson Highway was to link Fremantle through Cambridge, Claremont, Cottesloe, Mosman Park and Peppermint Grove, with the Mitchell Freeway.

There have been concerns over the years relating to sections of the highway running through Wembley Golf Complex, Bold Park and connecting to West Coast Highway near Claremont.

There have been many attempts to delete them from the route.
