Future golf star Freddie Lee shows
off his trophy at Churchlands Primary
School
|
Freddie Lee is just one year older than his golf
handicap of seven.
He has just won his first trophy at a
competition in Sydney for players under 12 years
old.
Last year he won eight competitions at Nedlands,
Lakelands, Gosnells, Wanneroo and Melville and was
awarded certificates.
And he picked up two certificates when he played
in his first two competitions in 2006.
Freddie, from Churchlands, said: "I have been
playing for four-and-a-half years.
"I started when I was four. I had plastic golf
clubs when I was two."
Now he has a coach and plays at the Wembley Golf
Complex - "When my putting is not very
good."
And he practises every day at home with his dad
David.
He said his mum Jenny owned a shop and his dad
worked there sometimes.
"But he likes to spend lots of time with me," he
said. "We have a garden but play upstairs.
"We have a putting mat and there is a net to
catch the balls.
"Sometimes I just practise posture and grip.
"When I started playing I used to hold it like
that," he said, demonstrating with his right hand
in front of his left.
"Then I changed it to this (left hand over
right).
"But now I hold it like this because you have to
have a V-shape up to your shoulder."
Freddie came second from 53 players in the Jack
Newton under-12s championships at Sefton Golf
Course when he visited Sydney during the school
holidays.
He said his 20-year-old brother Jimmy was
studying computers in Sydney.
"He plays golf, too, and has lots of
trophies."
Freddie said that when he finished school he
wanted to be a professional golfer.
He said his parents named him after PGA golfer
Fred Couples.
"I play football and soccer, too," he said. "I
like golf because I talk to my friends.
"My best friend, Adam, used to play golf but he
has given up now.
"My other best friend, Owen, has started playing
too."
