Cambridge mayor Simon Withers' idea of investing
Endowment Land Funds in the commercial areas of
Wembley and West Leederville (POST, 3/5) has
undeniable merit.
These areas, as the centre of our town, are
screaming out for upgrade and redevelopment. And if
it takes these funds to ignite the process, I think
it would be a good investment.
But it needs to be understood that the proceeds
of any investment would return to the Endowment
Lands Trust Account.
Such an investment, however, is not without
risk. And I have had discussions with the mayor
about this.
He has assured me the risks are minimal as his
proposal would be in line with the development
objectives of Planning and Infra-structure Minister
Alannah MacTiernan.
Mr Withers maintains the government also wants
to have a good working relationship with Cambridge
as the next decade will see much change, eg the
redevelopment of Subiaco Oval.
Past difficulties, which brought about
government interference over Perry Lakes, arose
because of differing views and divisions between
councillors.
Mr Withers now appears to have the unanimous
support of councillors from both Cambridge wards
and it would be prudent to get over the past and
move forward.
