Daniel Boase-Jelinek's inflammatory letter, "Is
Subi on the path back to the bad old days?" (POST,
3/5), once again reveals a deliberate strategy to
misinform the public.
He implies that councillor Allan Stoney
participated in the recent vote on the issue of
repairing the retaining wall around Lake Jualbup.
The truth is that Mr Stoney excused himself from
the full council meeting while the issue was being
debated and voted on and did not return until it
was over.
Mr Boase-Jelinek's letter also implies that the
five councillors who did not vote according to his
personal wishes somehow acted inappropriately in
this matter.
In my view, nothing could be further from the
truth and I am sure that every one of these
councillors feels deeply insulted by Mr
Boase-Jelinek's implication.
None of these councillors lives anywhere near
the lake and could have no possible vested interest
in the outcome.
They have consistently demonstrated that they
act with integrity and are prepared to listen to
and act on behalf of the community - as they
have done in this case.
Mr Boase-Jelinek's letter also reveals that,
like many who zealously push politically correct
rhetoric, his thinking is as simplistic as his
cartooning skills.
The issue voted on by the council was to
undertake appropriate maintenance on a major item
of city infrastructure which has been neglected for
15 years. It was not about permanent water in the
lake or anything else.
The lake, which used to be a rubbish tip, is in
a park in an inner city suburb. Some 50 years ago
it was developed into an urban amenity, a gift from
a past generation that deserves to be recognised
and valued.
To try and reverse 150 years of urban
development and recreate a lost ecology is folly.
Even King's Park can't do that.
