Opposition is widespread

As a resident of Mosman Park, I attended the public meeting on the proposed One Steel development and was bemused to read the report, "Developer says One Steel opponents 'misleading'", POST, Real Estate, 3/5).

I have not seen the website mentioned but some facts are clear, from the proponents' own presentation and the response of the meeting.

The bottom line is that at the meeting called by the Town of Mosman Park and the developer, which was attended by about 150 residents, there was almost universal condemnation of the plan; one solitary hand was raised in support.

Cottesloe MP Colin Barnett spoke against the height and said he would convey our concerns to parliament.

Mosman Park council opposes the height of the development and is liasing with the City of Fremantle. Fremantle councillors have contacted residents and expressed their concerns.

Concerns expressed at the public meeting were:

  • The building is too big;
  • It will, by every reasonable law of physics, shadow and reflect; the developers' own diagrams show the shadowing;
  • It will dominate the skyline, and block public and private view corridors; and
  • It will overlook, and, if approved, become the precedent for high-rise all along the coast and Stirling Highway.

Clearly its placement is inappropriate; no logical planning department would allow such a building beside R12.5/R20 zonings, as it would throw both the Fremantle and Metropolitan Regional Planning schemes into disarray and remove any certainty of purchase within specific zonings.

There is a lot more at stake here than just one building.

The opposition to this development is fair and reasonable and shared by the vast majority of the community.
