'Not intended for the public'

A teenage graffiti vandal was fined almost $6000 for spray painting a train on the move.

An 18-year-old caught train surfing on the Fremantle line earlier this year has been fined just under $6000.

Police security film showed the man holding on to the train with one hand and spray-painting it with the other.

The man, who was under 18 at the time and whose name cannot be published, appeared in Perth Children's Court on Wednesday charged with four counts of criminal damage, three of trespassing on a railway, one count of travelling on part of the train not intended for the public and one count of obstructing railways.

He was fined $5949.20, which includes compensation to the Public Transport Authority.

This week, the Police Rail Unit released a photo of the youth "surfing" on the coupling on the rear of a train between West Leederville and City West train stations in January.

He was one of seven arrested in September over a spate of crimes along the western suburbs railway line.

The gang was arrested after police searched houses in West Perth, Subiaco, Leederville, Floreat and Nedlands, seizing spray cans, bolt cutters, pepper spray, computers, mobile phones, weapons, cameras, drugs and bongs.

They were charged with 75 crimes, including criminal damage, graffiti, trespassing on railway lines, stealing, possessing weapons and possessing drugs.
