People who love the Station Street Markets in
Subiaco are holding a demonstration march to try to
save the markets on Saturday, October 20.
They have police permission to march between
noon and 1pm from the markets, up Rokeby Road to
Rankin Gardens, around Subiaco council's
offices.
They invite anybody interested in the markets to
wear something yellow - a shirt, ribbon,
headband, hat - and join in.
Tina Bassett, of Gloster Street, Subiaco, and
Ray Lee, of Duncraig Road, Duncraig, are helping to
organise the campaign to save the markets.
Tina said Ray got in touch after he saw a letter
her husband had written to the POST.
She said: "I am not a stallholder. I am a mother
of three girls who feels passionate about these
markets.
"I came here from England because where I was
living there were only supermarkets - no
small shops, no markets, no character.
"I love Australia and I love these markets.
"I was there last weekend asking people to sign
a petition, and after a few hours I was exhausted
from talking about it.
"An old lady came up and said her name was Hilda
- that she didn't buy anything, but she came
to meet her friends and have a cup of tea.
"It just got to me. I burst into tears.
"This is not about money - this is about
people. About making a nice, cheap place for the
Hildas and Uncle Harrys and all the other people
who use the markets as a safe place to meet
friends."
Mr Lee said he had distributed 10,000 copies of
a petition aimed at getting the Heritage Council to
list the markets on the state register, and
possibly delay the redevelopment of the site.
Owners of the markets have been given approval
by the Subiaco Redevelopment Authority to build a
four-storey office block on the south side.
The developer, Greg Pearce, has said they will
keep the markets, but reduce the number of stalls
and add a piazza.
Subiaco mayor Heather Henderson, and the
council, have said constantly that the markets are
important to the vitality and social fabric of
Subiaco.
Demolition of the south side of the markets is
due to start next month.
