'Taskforce treasures the trees'

Mueller Park's avenue of pines are some of 200 highly valued trees.

The 200 trees in Mueller Park, Subiaco, are important to John Langoulant, chief of the Major Stadia Taskforce, who is investigating sites for a Perth outdoor stadium.

He issued a statement declaring that one aim of designing a Subiaco option was to protect trees in Mueller Park.

There was loud protest at the first plan to take most of the trees out of the park to make way for a stadium, which would also need about 200 private homes to be bought and demolished.

The WA Football Commission and Subiaco council say they want Subiaco Oval to stay as the home of football and the stadium expanded without moving football out.

He said community consultation done as part of the taskforce's stage two work had indicated Subiaco residents and regular park users would prefer the trees to be protected.

As part of its stage one work, the taskforce recommended two sites incorporating three options for a new outdoor 60,000-seat oval stadium: East Perth, near the old power station, and Subiaco - either at Kitchener/Mueller Park, or a redevelopment of Subiaco Oval.

He said: "In our interim report we identified that the possible impact on trees in Mueller Park was an important community consideration that would need to be addressed.

"Since then the taskforce has been listening to the residents, business operators, community groups and local governments regarding the potential impacts of the possible stadium locations.

"The consultants conducting further design work have now indicated protection of the trees should be possible if a new Subiaco stadium site is selected.

"While final design work is still to be completed, the taskforce felt it was appropriate to advise the Subiaco community that its views are being taken into account and incorporated into our planning."
