International sports legends Jake Paterson and
Danny Green took the tough subjects of death and
suicide to a crowd of City Beach Surf Riders on
Wednesday night, after two members died.
Matt Pinner and Daniel Rolph died within weeks
of each other and were long-time members of the
club.
Jake, a Yallingup surfer, and Danny, a boxer
from Doubleview, said they faced great pressures
and failures in trying to be top of their
sports.
Danny did not even like "losing a game of
cards", but it was important to talk about it and
look to the bigger picture.
Danny said: "You have to put things in
perspective straightaway. After my fight with
Mundine, which 30,000 people watched, it went
Australia-wide - it was like a circus
- and I didn't win.
"The next day I went over to pick my daughter up
from the babysitter. I had a broken nose and a
black eye and she ran over and gave me a big hug,
and that just put it all into perspective.
"It hurt like hell but I live for my daughter,
my family and my mates."
Danny also talked about the suicide of his best
friend's brother, who had schizophrenia, the death
of a close family member, his years of rebellion by
drink driving and getting in trouble and his
inability to open up about feelings for a long
time.
"Communicating is the key, it's the essence to
everything," he said.
Suicide counsellor Cathy Jordan said those
thinking of suicide could find help through
counsellors, doctors, trusted family and friends,
and telephone help-lines like Lifeline on 13 11
14.
Matt Pinner's paddle-out last Saturday saw 200
friends and family gather at City Beach to bid
farewell.
Matt's surfboard was paddled out to sea by his
girlfriend Jackinta and brother Greg, where they
formed a circle with friends on their boards, to
pay respect with a minute's silence.
Matt's mother Aly was there.
Ryan Jacob, vice-president of City Beach Surf
Riders, said: "Matt was a good friend whom I knew
for about 12 years.
"He was an active member of the City Beach Surf
Riders and had a passion for the ocean.
"He always had time for his friends and was a
beautiful person who will be missed by his
mates."
Daniel was farewelled at a paddle-out on Sunday,
January 14.
