25,000 dollar reward as firebug strikes again

Up to $25,000 could be rewarded to the person who helps police convict the elusive arsonist who has struck in the western suburbs again.

The firebug has targeted St Andrew's units in Davies Road, Claremont, for the eighth time.

Five cars were torched at the units on Saturday, October 29, which takes the tally to 14 cars damaged by fire.

A resident said: "It's really quite scary because we are a couple of young girls living on our own.

"I get really jumpy at night now and I will look out the window a couple of times a night.

"Everyone's paranoid."

She said she was having to park her car away from the flats in case of another attack.

FESA fire and investigation analysis unit manager Phill Cribb said: "The arson attacks were serious and posed a threat to both property and life."

Claremont detectives said the attacks at the units were frequent between April 12 and May 29 but had stopped for six months until now.

Skips, bins and bushes around Claremont had also been torched.

Two cars were burnt in Nedlands in May and in Mosman Park in June.

Claremont detectives and the Fire and Emergency Services Authority (FESA) are starting a community awareness campaign, due to start next week, in a bid to reduce arson attacks and find the suspected serial firebug.

They are appealing to the public for any information that could lead to an arrest.

If information helps convict an arsonist, a reward can be claimed through the police, who then submit an application to be assessed. If authorised, the reward will be paid on behalf of the insurer by the Insurance Council of Australia.

Anyone with information can contact Claremont detectives on 9384 2444. For fire safety tips visit www.fesa.wa.gov.au or contact FESA on 9323 9300.
