Steve's legal action

A legal challenge is almost certain after Nedlands council approved altered plans for land around Steves Nedlands Park Hotel.

Residents who challenged the proposal by Multiplex for blocks of flats, houses and commercial development said they were talking to lawyers about the way the council had handled the planning application.

Spokeswoman CarolynWoodhouse said: "There are a number of options. We are considering the position."

She said residents could ask the Supreme Court to quash the council's decision or ask Planning Minister Alannah MacTiernan to intervene and send the application to the State Administrative Tribunal.

"What was approved by the council was way outside the minister's recommendations," Ms Woodhouse said.

The shortage of parking spaces had attracted many protests.

A clause to try to reduce the number of drinkers in the hotel from 1600 was added to the conditions of the planning approval.

But several attempts by councillors to reduce the height of one of the new blocks of units, failed.

Deputy mayor Sheryle Froese urged the council to reject the plan and start again.

"This is a beautiful area enjoyed by all residents of the city," she said.

"That amenity is for all of us and we need to be very careful what we put there."
