Re Beach Boy's letter, "One hour on beach is enough" (POST, 29/12).

Something must be done about the Cottesloe main beach carpark. People hog carpark spaces for lengthy periods, and parking spaces never seem to be available during peak hours.

By simply decreasing the three-hour limit to one hour or less, the problem isn't being solved effectively.

Enforcing this would mean more parking inspector check-ups, without a revenue to pay these people.

What is needed is a paid parking system, but the problem is that Cottesloe council is not allowed to enforce paid parking along the beach, as the state government claims that Cottesloe's beaches are used by everyone and so parking should stay free.

But in the end, who pays to keep Cottesloe's beaches maintained? Cottesloe ratepayers.

How much does it cost for people to enjoy the beach? Nothing. So why not make people pay for the luxury of parking next to the beach that others pay to maintain?

Enforcing paid parking in certain areas will encourage people to use alternative travel methods to the beach, such as trains and buses, and the train-to-beach shuttle.

Politicians claim that paid parking in areas used by everyone is un-Australian, but how come there is paid parking almost everywhere in Fremantle?
