Infill row splits Neds neighbours

A row over infill housing had destroyed a neighbourhood and split friends, Nedlands councillors were told.

Bedford Street householder Alison Swan said the Christmas party was off and neighbours no longer spoke to each other.

Householders from around Bedford Street heckled each other across Nedlands council chamber and were disciplined by mayor Laurie Taylor as they pitched for and against the council's rezoning land.

Stephen Bennett, of Loftus Street, said infill development had driven his family from Wembley Downs to Nedlands.

"We chose to leave Wembley Downs to come to Nedlands but now are faced with the same prospect," Mr Bennett said.

Others argued there had been enough talking over the years and they wanted action.

Tom Donaldson said: "A large amount of consultation has taken place before we reached this stage."

The council decided not to accept the item as a late addition to the agenda and the proposed rezoning was not discussed.
