Champion ruckman Bill Dempsey ready
for a new game.
|
West Perth football legend Bill Dempsey has a new
goal in sight.
A hero of the three great West Perth WAFL
premiership teams of 1969, 1971 and 1975 and a
Simpson medallist, Mr Dempsey is running for
election to Cambridge council.
Mr Dempsey, 61, has lived in Cambridge Street,
Wembley, with his partner for 12 years and says he
wants to give something back to the community.
"It is a good lifestyle, I love it and I like
walking around the area and talking to people," he
said.
"I don't think just one person can make a
difference but I will give it a go."
Mr Dempsey works for the Department of Housing
and Works.
He is a little surprised when people remember
him from the days when he played for West Perth
under captain Polly Farmer.
He and premiership team-mate Mel Whinnen both
receiv3d the MBE for services to football and have
a gate named after them at Subiaco Oval.
Mr Dempsey said he would not campaign on any
particular issue.
"I do lots of things," he said. "I think of what
I have got out of the community and now I have some
time to spend, I want to give something back."
Mr Dempsey is one of four candidates for two
seats in the Wembley ward.
