Moves to sell the Montgomery Hall complex could
be shelved, predicted Nedlands mayor John
Paterson.
He said the government had not been open enough
about redevelopment of the site.
"I believe they have gone the wrong way about
the process," said Mr Paterson.
"The bottom line is the government may not
accept either tender.
"I think it is likely to happen," he said.
Mr Paterson said he agreed with Mt Claremont
residents that they should have been told more
about proposals to redevelop the former hospital
complex.
Mr Paterson said he recently joined a government
committee considering two bids to take over the
complex that was saved for its heritage value when
the St John's Wood estate was opened for
development more than a decade ago.
It has been largely unused since then, although
part was renovated, with government grants, by the
WA Music Academy.
Mt Claremont residents have repeatedly asked for
more information about the proposals.
Last week John Hebenton, a member of the Mt
Claremont Residents' Association, said the
government should give residents the same sort of
say as Dalkeith residents were getting over the
development of the former Sunset Hospital site.
Mr Paterson said now that he was on the
Montgomery Hall committee he would push for more
information.
"Now we are part of the process, it is my duty
as mayor to see the city's interests and the
interests of the community are looked at."
Mr Paterson chairs an advisory committee
examining options for the redevelopment of the
Sunset site.
He said heritage and landscape consultants
talked to the committee on Monday about ways to
preserve parts of the site and how to improve
access.
The committee is due to report to the government
in October.
