Dog thieves strike at refuge

Dog's home staff member John Lovell ponders the type of people who would steal a dog. A boarder (left) seems to be thankful he was overlooked by the "dognappers".

Desperate dog thieves struck at the Shenton Park Dogs' Refuge Home this week.

The only clues were a drop of blood, a pool of fresh urine and snipped fences.

Staff were horrified to discover that a 14-week-old Jack Russell pup, Tigger, was missing when they arrived at the home on Monday.

Linda Fellows, an employee of the refuge, said a big hole had been snipped in the wire of Tigger's cage.

A drop of blood on the wire was identified as being human, rather than canine, by scientific police who arrived shortly after the alarm was raised.

Fresh urine in the kennel put the time of the crime in the early hours of Tuesday - one witness heard shouting from the home about 6am.

Tigger's been "dognapped".

Linda said there was a second, bigger hole cut in the boundary fence on one side of the compound, where the thieves probably got in.

There were lots of potential owners interested in Tigger over the weekend, but most accepted that he was not ready for sale.

Tigger would have put on sale for about $300, which included sterilisation, vaccination, a vet check and microchipping.

Linda said staff suspected a couple in their late 20s, who were very interested in Tigger when they were at the home on Monday afternoon.

The couple had refused to leave when the home's gates shut at 4pm and hung around until 4.40pm, looking at the pup.

Linda said: "I don't think they realise what work bringing up a puppy is.

"If they can't look after him, I hope they bring him back, and don't just dump him.

"But they don't seem like that sort of people."
