The Perth Royal Show will be extended to nine
days this year to launch its new $1.8 million
amphitheatre-styled arena.
Work on the main arena upgrade is in the final
stages and has replaced the old speedway site at
the Claremont showgrounds.
Royal Agricultural Society president Lou Giglia
said the show had been extended from September 29
to October 7 for an extra day on a trial basis.
It would give showgoers the chance to relax and
enjoy uncramped conditions.
"Our exit surveys showed people are not excited
about crowds," Mr Giglia said.
"This will mean there will be a lot more room
for people.
"Work was to have been completed by the first of
this month but the wet weather has slowed things.
It will all happen in the next two weeks."
More than 445,000 people visited the Perth Royal
Show over eight days last year.
RAS property services manager Paul Roberts has
been in charge of overseeing work at the arena.
He said public accessibility had been the
motivation for the new arena, which is encircled by
limestone seating and a one metre tall cabling
fence.
"The fence is designed to take the weight of a
charging bull." he said.
"The big thing is that the public will be so
close.
"You have not got 20m of speedway track now. The
fence has gone and the track, which was always
muddy, has now gone.
"This year there is a lot of public
involvement."
For the first time a family show pass is on sale
for $46 for two adults and two children.
The pass is only available at Woolworths.
An adult ticket is $16, up $3 from last year,
and a child's ticket is $9.
A Wedding Expo is one of the new events to be
held at the show.
Major entertainers this year will include
trumpet player and singer James Morrison and
country music singer Adam Brand.
