All girl grunge band
Sewell's Toys - Jessica Marais (front) and
Georgia Moncreiff on guitar and vocals,
Sanchia Stowe on bass and Charlie Moore on
drums - are following in Silverchair's
footsteps... literally.
|
Sewell's Toys, the all-girl grunge band from St
Hilda's which won the Battle of the Band state
final, have not let success go to their heads.
For band member Jessica Marais, one of the most
amazing things about winning means the band gets a
guest gig at the Entertainment Centre - and
they'll get to stand on exactly the same spot on
the stage where Newcastle sensation silverchair
once stood.
With the state final under their belt, Sewell's
Toys will go on to compete in the national finals
of the Battle of the Bands competition, in
Sydney.
The band members, all in Year 10, are Jessica
Marais and Georgia Moncrieff on guitar and vocals,
Sanchia Stowe on bass and Charlie Moore on
drums.
Jessica said six months ago they had decided to
take Sewell's Toys seriously and had worked hard to
get to the Battle of the Bands.
Mentors
Two mentors at the school, Marcus Roberts and
Jon-Paul Bullard, had a big influence on the girls'
decision.
Jessica said the Battle of the Bands had been
their first gig in public, and the girls were
amazed to be performing in front of a crowd of
2500.
They had only played at school functions
before.
They did two original songs for the contest,
When You Were Sleeping, and Op Shop.
Since the competition, they have played a paid
gig with Deckchair Theatre.
Jessica said people had already classed Sewell's
Toys as a grunge band, but they didn't really
consider themselves as having a set style.
Their grunge image could have something to do
with the ugg boots Jessica wore during the
competition, or the beanie worn by Georgia.
They will perform at the Entertainment Centre
next Friday, as a showcase of Battle of the Bands
for the Rock Eisteddfod.
